Workshops

One of WISP’s key aims is to support women in STEM in the Plymouth travel to work area. The primary way that we do this is by providing Events for these women and their allies to attend, building skills and making friends.

However, WISP also recognises that by supporting local businesses to make their environments more gender inclusive, the world gets better for women in STEM. To that end, we have launched these workshops with our local collaborator, MESH – a Communiversity that uses the power of local experts to provide others with the opportunity to improve and learn new skills.

If you have an idea for a workshop that WISP could facilitate, please get in touch!

Watch your Language!

Why language matters for gender equality (generally and for your business)? The aim of this workshop is to empower SMEs to recruit/attract more women to their companies or events, by ensuring they are not unconsciously sending out the wrong signals.

This workshop is facilitated by Dr Lorna Dallas, our Chair. Don’t miss out and book your place!

By the end of the Watch Your Language session, you should be able to:

Understand that language can be a powerful barrier to women’s engagement with events, activities or jobs and give some examples of this.
Recognise the importance of using both verbs and adjectives when describing events, activities or jobs.
Recognise non-inclusive words in copy and come up with better alternatives.
Understand what imposter syndrome is and what effect it has on the impact of advertising.
Recognise sexist language and thus be empowered to stop it.
