Why is it important for your company to strive for gender equality?

Plessey are committed to recruiting a diverse workforce to ensure we are equipped with the right skills and knowledge to develop and manufacture hi-tech LED products within the UK which are then sold all over the world. With a limited number of talented engineers available, it is important we attract both female and male applicants to increase our talent pool.

What steps have you taken so far?

Plessey were involved with the original set up of the Plymouth Women in STEM group and have been regular supporters for the past 4 years.

Plessey actively work with local schools, colleges and universities to help promote the benefits of a STEM related career and are particularly keen to encourage young female students to continue with STEM related subjects into GCSE and A’ level to widen their career opportunities.

Plessey are also a keen supporter of the Plymouth Manufacturing Group Apprenticeship Fair held at the Plymouth Guildhall in March every year.

We have an ongoing recruitment strategy to attract both female and male applicants for all our apprenticeship and graduate opportunities.

What advice would you give to other STEM companies that want to increase their gender equality?

I would encourage other local companies to get involved with WISP as it is a very enthusiastic and committed group of women with an abundance of talent.

Why are networking groups like WISP important to your company?

Networking groups like WISP are vital to getting the word out there and promoting the myriad of opportunities in STEM related careers plus the opportunity for young women to see and hear from local role models in a range of careers and industries. It is hugely rewarding to attend WISP events and help promote and explain what is available in the local area and help both women and men enter or remain within STEM related careers and provide local networking opportunities.
